World Bank-AUU and ACEGID Team at the Implementation meeting held recently at Redeemer's University

The World Bank-Association of African Universities team has visited Redeemer's University to review planned activities towards the implementation of the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID) project.

The two-member team of World Bank-AUU had two eminent, internationally acclaimed experts in the field of Medicine in the persons of Professor OK  Pannenborg, a former Chief Health Advisor to the World Health Organisation and Professor  Charles Olweny, an expert in the field of Internal Medicine and  the Vice-Chancellor of Uganda Martyrs University.

Speaking at the event, Professor   Olweny said that ACEGID should enlarge its scope in building capacity through short courses. He noted that while the proposal submitted laid emphasis on research based education, it would be great if an attempt is made to build capacity through short courses.

He further advised that collaboration with pharmaceutical companies should be encouraged in order to have viable commercial partnerships.

The team of experts charged the centre to obtain international certifications that would enhance its acceptability among centers of excellence across the globe. The team also urged the centre to make community relations part of its curriculum.

"For your centre to succeed you must have a project office. You must also formalize your relationship with the Ministries of Education and Health," Professor Olweny stressed.

Various issues ranging from procurement of equipment by the centre, alternative sources of funding, governance to internal audit were rigorously discussed at the meeting.

Earlier in the meeting, Professor Pannenborg gave a brief history of ACE projects in Central Africa and West Africa.

Meanwhile, the Annual H3 Africa & ACEGID Implementation meeting was held recently at the Senate Chamber, Redeemer's University, Mowe, Ogun State.

Welcoming the delegates, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Debo Adeyewa, commended all the collaborators on the project for job well done.

He stated that all eyes were on the university because of the World Bank grant won by ACEGID.

Professor Adeyewa charged ACEGID and its collaborators to uphold the bar of excellence.
