The Institute for Genomics and Global Health (IGH) formerly African Center of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), based at Redeemer’s University, Nigeria, is focused on driving innovation in viral genomics research, outbreak response, diagnostic development, and capacity building. Established in 2013 and supported by public and philanthropic funders from across the globe, the IGH platform is building genomics pipelines, advancing our understanding of microbial threats, and training the next generation of African scientists how to identify, manage and control these threats. IGH is built upon strong collaborations forged across West Africa (Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone) and beyond (United States, United Kingdom) allowing for increased reach and scalability of its innovations.
Position Description
We are seeking an experienced Science Communications Officer to develop, implement, and manage communication strategies and content that promote the research, discoveries, and achievements of the institutions’ scientific community. The role aims to enhance the reputation of the institution through clear, engaging, and accessible science communication.
The successful candidate will work closely with faculty and researchers to gather information on ongoing research projects, the communications team and other staff members, and external stakeholders, including media outlets, industry partners, and public engagement groups.
Content Development and Communication
Develop and produce high-quality content across various channels (press releases, website articles, social media, newsletters, research summaries) to effectively communicate scientific research to diverse audiences. Collaborate with faculty and researchers to identify key stories and breakthroughs for internal and external communication.
Media Relations
Build and maintain relationships with media outlets and journalists to ensure the institution’s research receives coverage. Draft press releases, respond to media inquiries, and coordinate interviews with researchers and experts. Monitor and evaluate media coverage to assess impact and identify future engagement opportunities.
Public Engagement
Organize and promote public engagement activities (science talks, workshops, events) to raise awareness of the Iinstitutions's scientific work. Support researchers in creating accessible outreach materials and presentations for non-expert audiences.
Social Media and Digital Communication
Manage the institution's social media platforms (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) to share regular updates on research activities. Develop digital strategies to enhance public and researcher engagement, and create multimedia content (videos, podcasts, infographics) to support communication of scientific innovation.
Internal Communications
Support internal communication efforts to keep faculty, staff, and students informed about scientific achievements and relevant university-wide initiatives. Assist in creating newsletters and reports to communicate research progress and breakthroughs within the institution's community.
Research Impact and Evaluation
Track and report on the effectiveness of communication campaigns, analyzing audience reach, media coverage, and engagement metrics. Contribute to research impact assessments by highlighting the societal benefits of the institution’s research.
- A degree in science communication, journalism, public relations, or a related field. A background in the sciences or an advanced degree in a scientific discipline is highly desirable
- At least 2 years of experience in science communication, media relations, or a similar role, ideally in an academic or research-based environment.
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to simplify complex scientific concepts for diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in digital communication tools and social media platforms.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills with experience in media relations, stakeholder engagement, and public speaking.
- Familiarity with multimedia tools (e.g., video editing, graphic design, podcasting) is an advantage.
- A solid understanding of the research landscape, including the ability to communicate across multiple scientific disciplines.
Working Relationships
This is an onsite position from 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday, at the Institute of Genomics and Global Health, Redeemers University, Ede, Osun state. This position will report to the Director of Communications.
