The African Center of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), based at Redeemer’s University, Nigeria, is focused on driving innovation in viral genomics research, outbreak response, diagnostic development, and capacity building. Established in 2013 and supported by the World Bank and the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) H3Africa consortium, among other funders, the ACEGID platform is building genomics pipelines, advancing our understanding of microbial threats, and training the next generation of African scientists how to identify, manage and control these threats. ACEGID is built upon strong collaborations forged across West Africa (Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone) and beyond (United States, United Kingdom) allowing for increased reach and scalability of its innovations.
Position Description:
We seek a highly motivated individual to work closely with researchers across the ACEGID network of labs across Nigeria.
The ability to communicate effectively, work well in a team setting, and a strong desire to learn new methods are required. The candidate’s role will be, to collect (from field outreach or within the clinic/lab), analyze and store samples collected as part of any ACEGID research projects. The role also includes effectively implementing laboratory protocols, accurately documenting and reporting test results, quality control/assurance, method development and refinement, and managing laboratory inventory, among other responsibilities. The position offers an excellent opportunity to participate in a dynamic research environment in an exciting fast-paced field of research.
The position is a 2-year renewable contract, subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
Main duties/key responsibilities
• Ensure that work meets established quality standards, regulations, and is delivered on time.
• Support the administration of zoonotic research, helping ensure compliance with good practice in relation to the conduct of research, the ethics policy, and other relevant policies.
• Support the Head of Zoonotic Team to maintain adequate reagents, inventory and supplies and ensure proper utilization of consumables with minimum waste.
• Undertake high quality research & scholarship, including contributing to drafting major grant proposals and/or leading on drafting small grant proposals.
• Provide medical services in support of the health of animals that are part of medical research and studies. Prescribe medications, establish, and administer treatment plans.
• Review epidemiological models in use by the team.
• Carry out vet field work, sample collection and analysis.
• Write reports for submission to research sponsors.
• Maintain accurate and complete records of all findings, prepare, and produce tables and reports of results.
• Contribute to peer-reviewed publications, including as first author.
• Help with preparing research protocols, submitting protocols for ethical review and amending protocols as needed.
• Assist in the interpretation of results and to seek to identify areas of interest that warrant further investigation.
• Support the Head of Zoonotic Team to monitor projects concerning progress and cost.
• Manage small grants or elements of larger grants, ensuring compliance with good practice in relation to the conduct of research, the ethics policy, and other relevant policies.
• Contribute to preparing explanatory materials on the methods and results of the research for both scientific and non-scientific audiences.
Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Demonstrable education and experience of working in Veterinary or/and ‘One Health’ related research activities
• Primary knowledge of molecular biology and laboratory medicine
• Ability to communicate with the different study participants
• Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment
• Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards
• Understanding of zoonotic disease surveillance and One Health
• Excellent interpersonal verbal and written communication skills
• Cross-cultural competency: ability to work with a diverse, global team.
• English fluency
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Animal Health, Zoology, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, or related fields
• Master’s degree in Veterinary Science or any life science discipline
• Ph.D. in any life science subject is an added advantage
• At least 1 year of relevant experience
• Experience in data entry in electronic databases and conducting interviews and focus groups; managing communications tools for scientific communication; handling electronic data (entry and management
• Veterinary or/and One Health educational background
• Experience in global health preferred
