The African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID) is the winner of the 2021 Al-Sumait Prize for African Development. The Board of Trustees of the Al-Sumait Prize made the award announcement recently.
ACEGID was awarded the prize “for its leading development of the field of infectious disease genomics, through the high-quality translational research and capacity building in Africa,” said the announcement.
The Al-Sumait Prize for African Development was initiated by the State of Kuwait in honour of the late Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Sumait, the Kuwaiti doctor who combated health, education and food security challenges in Africa through his career.
ACEGID shares the award with Dr John Nkengasong, the Director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). Dr Nkengasong received the award for his leadership of Africa CDC in the design and implementation of Africa’s system for disease prevention, control and surveillance.
The award comes with a prize of one million dollars for the joint awardees.
The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) gives the AI-Sumait Prize to recognize scientists, scientific projects, applied research and initiatives with a significant positive impact on economic, social, human resources and infrastructural development in Africa.
This is the latest in the series of recognitions received by ACEGID. It will be recalled that the centre recently won the Nigerian Academy of Science 2021 Gold Medal Prize award.
