The African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID) on October 4, 2024, unveiled the Herbert Wigwe Memorial Fountain and Garden in honour of Dr. Herbert Wigwe. The unveiling event was a solemn session to reflect on the contributions, values and legacy of Dr. Wigwe, who until his death was a silent, steadfast and strong supporter of ACEGID’s work.
The colourful vibrance of the greenery and flowers beautifully complemented the monochrome hues of the large blocks mounted across the garden. A memorial plaque lay in front of a bold white rectangular centrepiece covered with pictures & quotes of Dr. Herbert Wigwe. In the middle of the centrepiece was the water fountain. These white blocks displaying his quotes remind us that although gone, Herbert Wigwe will not be forgotten.
At the memorial event, Prof. Shadrach Akindele, the Vice Chancellor of the Redeemer’s University gave a welcome address.
Dignitaries that graced the event include Hon. Teslim Igbalaye, Secretary to Osun State Government, representing Senator Ademola Adeleke, the State Governor; Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the Founder and Chairman of the Dangote Group; Mr. Emeka Wigwe, brother of the late Herbert Wigwe; and Mrs. Chizoma Okoli, Deputy Managing Director of Access Bank, among others.
Alhaji Aliko Dangote expressed his gratitude for immortalising Herbert’s name through the fountain and garden.
Mr. Emeka Wigwe admonished that as ACEGID celebrates her 10th year anniversary of the centre, the memory of Herbert should be “honoured in ways that include pushing boundaries in genomic research and public health, fostering collaborative partnership that drives meaningful changes and inspiring future generations to carry forward his legacies.”
Delivering a heartfelt tribute, Prof. Christian Happi, the Director of ACEGID, described Dr. Herbert Wigwe as a close friend. While reminiscing about fond memories of his friend, he emphasised Herbert’s love and support for quality education and research.
“Herbert motivated some of us. He changed the trajectory for some of the things we’re doing. We were too focused on infectious diseases, thinking of all the viruses and things that circulate around,” said Prof. Happi. “But I remember him challenging me. He gave me some very personal stories and he told me: ‘Why can’t you think about finding a solution to this as well?’ Of course, that struck a chord and we started working on that. Now, we will be working on cancer, prostate cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer.” Prof. Happi thanked his friend for throwing out such a challenge to him.
He further noted that “Herbert embodied the spirit of commitment to improving human health & life and that is really what embodies the work that we do here in ACEGID.”
Afterwards, guests also gave words of remembrance, sharing brief words and anecdotes about Herbert. The event ended with a vote of thanks from Prof. Anise Happi, the Deputy Director of Zoonotic Research and Surveillance in ACEGID.
Following the brief session, the plaque was unveiled and the fountain uncovered.
“Today, as we unveil this beautiful fountain and garden in his name, we’re creating a space that will honour Herbert’s memory and serve as a centre for reflection, inspiration, and community. It will be a place that will be a continual reminder of his impact on the world, in Nigeria and in Africa.” Prof. Christian Happi noted during his tribute.
The Herbert Wigwe Memorial Fountain and Garden will serve as a constant reminder of Herbert’s dedication to quality education and advancing research across diverse areas.
